Treasury Department Removes 84 Entries from Sanctions List to Streamline Programs
The U.S. Treasury Department has removed 84 individuals and companies from its sanctions lists as part of an ongoing review aimed at streamlining sanctions programs. This effort, initiated by Secretary Scott Bessent in May, seeks to eliminate outdated entries and reduce compliance burdens on financial institutions. The review has already resulted in the removal of 76 entries from the over 17,000 sanctions lists. The Treasury's goal is to ensure that sanctions remain effective and focused, removing unnecessary entries from previous administrations. The recent removals include deceased individuals, outdated narcotics listings, and Iraq-related entities from the early 1990s. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has also updated listings to include missing identifiers, facilitating easier compliance screening for financial institutions.
