Five Eyes Intelligence Agencies Warn of Chinese Espionage via LinkedIn Targeting Sensitive Sectors
The Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which includes the FBI, MI5, and agencies from Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, has issued a joint advisory warning about potential espionage activities conducted by Chinese operatives using LinkedIn. These operatives are reportedly targeting government officials, military personnel, academics, and policy experts by posing as recruiters or consultants. The advisory highlights that these operatives use job offers, consultancy pitches, and research assignments as a guise to approach individuals with access to sensitive national security information. The initial contact often appears legitimate, but can gradually shift towards requests for sensitive or non-public information. The operatives are said to use front companies posing as overseas consultancies or research organizations, making them difficult to identify. LinkedIn has stated that impersonation and misrepresentation violate its policies and that it actively removes fake accounts.
