Iran Seizes Sanctioned Tanker Linked to Its Oil Industry, Raising Regional Tensions
Iran has seized a tanker, previously known as the Ocean Koi, which has longstanding ties to its own oil industry. The vessel, now trading as Jin Li, was captured by Iranian forces under the directive of the Supreme National Security Council. The tanker has been involved in transporting Iranian heavy fuel oil and condensate exports, and was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury in February 2026. The ship, part of Iran's shadow fleet since 2020, was operating as a stateless vessel after its flag registration with Barbados ceased. The Iranian military claims the seizure was to prevent harm to its oil exports, although the exact reasons remain unclear.
