Former Republican Congressman David Jolly Secures Democratic Nomination for Florida Governor
David Jolly, a former Republican congressman, has won the Democratic primary election for governor in Florida. This victory positions him as the party's nominee to succeed outgoing Governor Ron DeSantis, who is term-limited. Jolly previously represented Florida’s 13th Congressional District from 2014 to 2017. After losing his re-election bid to Democratic challenger Charlie Crist, Jolly publicly expressed his disagreements with the direction of the Republican Party and President Trump. In 2018, he published an opinion piece stating that one 'can’t be never-Trump and be a Republican' and subsequently left the Republican Party to register with no party affiliation. Jolly's campaign has focused on issues such as insurance affordability, public schools, and campaign finance reform, alongside supporting traditionally Democratic platform elements like increasing access to abortion. He has raised nearly $6.4 million for his campaign.
