Houston Doctor Indicted for Alleged $30 Million Federal Healthcare Fraud Scheme
Dr. Joseph A. Montes, a Houston-area doctor, has been indicted for his alleged involvement in a multi-year scheme to defraud the federal government. The indictment charges Montes with conspiracy to defraud the United States, five counts of wire fraud, and six counts of money laundering. Prosecutors claim that between 2020 and 2022, Montes and his clinics submitted approximately $30 million in fraudulent claims for medical services that allegedly never occurred. Of these claims, about $20 million was ultimately paid out by the federal government. A notable detail in the indictment highlights that over 9,000 claims were filed in a single day, suggesting an impossible patient visit rate of one every nine seconds over a 24-hour period. The Bob Casey United States Courthouse on Rusk Street in downtown Houston is the location where these legal proceedings are taking place.
