Weakening Atlantic Ocean Current May Intensify California Storms
A recent study highlights the potential global weather impacts of a weakening Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a critical ocean current system. Researchers, including UC Riverside's Mohima Sultana Mimi, have observed that the AMOC, which redistributes heat by moving warm water northward and cold water southward, is slowing down. This disruption could lead to warmer equatorial waters, influencing hurricane development and altering wind and rainfall patterns. Specifically, a weakened AMOC strengthens prevailing winds in the North Pacific, which in turn drives more intense atmospheric rivers toward California. These atmospheric rivers, capable of transporting vast amounts of water vapor, are a key factor in the state's weather systems, often bringing heavy rainfall and snowfall.
