Wakefield Fire Department Battles Large Blaze at Abandoned Warehouse, Disrupts Local Rail Service
A significant fire broke out at an abandoned warehouse in Wakefield, Massachusetts, on Friday afternoon, sending thick black smoke into the air. The fire occurred in the Foundry Street area, prompting a substantial response from the Wakefield Fire Department. Multiple ladder companies were deployed to contain the blaze, which required additional alarms due to the intensity and manpower needed. The fire chief, Thomas Purcell, noted the challenging conditions, including high temperatures, which necessitated an 'all hands' approach. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries. The fire also led to a temporary suspension of service at a nearby MBTA Commuter Rail station, which has since resumed operations. Fire crews are expected to remain on the scene throughout the night to address any remaining hot spots.
