Michigan Considers Permanent Biosecurity Measures Following Avian Flu Outbreak
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is reviewing proposed changes to the Generally Accepted Agricultural and Management Practices (GAAMPs) to include permanent biosecurity measures. These changes follow the 2024 avian influenza outbreak that prompted emergency biosecurity mandates across Michigan farms. The proposed guidelines aim to establish reliable emergency response strategies to prevent future outbreaks. Key measures include maintaining baseline biosecurity protocols, designating a Biosecurity Manager, and implementing personnel and visitor protocols. Public input on the proposed changes is being sought before the end of August.
