Chinese Immigrant and School Principal Yvonne Chan's Journey to Achieving the American Dream
Yvonne Chan, a Chinese immigrant and principal of the Vaughn Next Century Learning Center in San Fernando, California, has shared her story of achieving the American dream. Chan's journey began with her arrival in the United States from China, where she was raised by a single mother who worked as a housekeeper. With the support of the American Maryknoll Sisters in Hong Kong, Chan was able to pursue higher education in the U.S., eventually earning a graduate degree from UCLA. Her career has spanned roles as a teacher, school principal, and policymaker on the California State Board of Education. Chan has also served as a commissioner on the Los Angeles City Commission for children and families. Her efforts have focused on improving educational outcomes and creating a social services center that provides vaccinations, child care, job training, and legal aid to the community.
