IMF Provides $346 Million in Emergency Aid as Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Exceeds 5,000
The death toll from the recent twin earthquakes in Venezuela has surpassed 5,000, with the majority of casualties occurring in the coastal state of La Guaira. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck on June 24, causing widespread devastation. Over 16,740 people were injured, and approximately 20,000 remain displaced, many living in overcrowded shelters lacking basic amenities. In response to the disaster, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released $346 million in emergency funds to assist with humanitarian needs. This financial aid comes after the IMF and World Bank restored relations with Venezuela earlier this year, following the removal of former President Nicolas Maduro. The Venezuelan government, led by Interim President Delcy Rodriguez, has faced criticism for its handling of the disaster, with accusations of delayed response and inadequate rescue efforts.
