Texas Heat Wave Challenges State Grid's Power Demand Record
A severe heat wave across eastern Texas is putting significant pressure on the state's power grid, with demand nearing the all-time record set in August 2023. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (Ercot) reported that demand on Monday afternoon approached 85.508 gigawatts, and forecasts indicate even higher peak loads for Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Despite the increased demand, Ercot confirmed that the power demand record was not surpassed on Monday. The heat wave has resulted in temperatures exceeding 100°F (38°C) from Dallas to Houston, with the heat index potentially reaching 112°F due to rising humidity from Tropical Storm Bertha. This situation has led to repeated emergency alerts and requests for large industrial users to reduce consumption, while the U.S. Department of Energy has occasionally directed power plants to operate at full capacity, bypassing some environmental restrictions.
