Frontex Deploys Patrol Vessel to English Channel for Search and Rescue Operations
Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, has deployed a patrol vessel to the English Channel for the first first time. This deployment aims to support French search and rescue operations involving small, overcrowded boats. The Spanish Guardia Civil offshore patrol vessel, Duque de Ahumada, began operations this week and will be replaced by the Río Segura in late September. This vessel will work in conjunction with a surveillance aircraft that Frontex has operated over the Channel since 2021. The mission is to enhance situational awareness by detecting, verifying, and tracking small boats, providing real-time information to French authorities. This initiative is coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Gris-Nez and operates under the authority of the Manche Mer du Nord Maritime Prefect.
