Governor Josh Stein Expresses Concerns Over North Carolina Hemp Bill's Impact on Industry
Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has expressed reservations about House Bill 328, which aims to ban intoxicating hemp products in the state. Stein, a Democrat, has been a proponent of regulating the hemp industry, particularly advocating for age restrictions on the sale of such products. The bill, however, proposes a more extensive ban, which has raised concerns among hemp business owners who argue that it could severely impact the $4 billion industry. Stein has highlighted the need for consumer protection and supports a regulated THC market for adults. He also expressed concerns about the bill's provisions regarding kratom, a substance that can act as an opioid in large quantities. The bill distinguishes between natural and synthetic kratom, with the latter being classified as a controlled substance. Stein has pointed out the lack of strict ID checks for the sale of kratom and hemp products, which he believes is necessary to protect minors.
