Hawaii Communities Lead Disaster Response Amid Hurricane Lala Recovery
In the aftermath of Hurricane Lala and with Tropical Storm Moke approaching, Hawaii's community networks have stepped up to provide critical disaster relief. Local organizations, nonprofits, and residents have mobilized to deliver food, medical supplies, and other essential resources to affected areas, often outpacing state and federal aid. For example, Kimberly 'Aulani' Fanene, a community leader in Punaluu, has been coordinating meal deliveries and distributing supplies to multiple islands, including Molokai and West Oahu. The Hawaii Community Foundation (HCF) has also been instrumental, directing resources through its Stronger Hawai‘i Fund, which aims to raise $10 million for disaster recovery. As of now, $1.7 million is available, with $732,000 already distributed to 12 organizations across three islands.
