Former Warren Police Chief Seeks Reinstatement, Alleges Coerced Resignation
Former Warren Police Chief Eric Merkel has formally requested the Warren Civil Service Commission to reinstate him, claiming his resignation was coerced and not voluntary. Merkel hand-delivered a letter to the commission, asserting that city officials procured his resignation through threats, coercion, political considerations, and disparate treatment, in violation of Ohio law. He had previously notified the city on August 23 that he was withdrawing his resignation, but the city refused to reinstate him. Merkel's letter alleges that he was given an ultimatum to resign or be terminated on July 8, 2026, less than 24 hours after a complaint was filed against him by an officer under his command, Frank Tempesta. The complaint alleged Merkel made a racial remark and claimed pay for hours not worked.
