Bradford Mother Praises Generation Study After Early Detection of Rare Genetic Condition in Sons
A mother from Bradford, Jessica Barker-Roe, has expressed immense gratitude for her participation in the Generation Study, a medical research project run by Genomics England and the NHS. While in the hospital, she enrolled her youngest son in the study, which subsequently identified that both he and his older brother carry a genetic change linked to adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). ALD is a progressive condition affecting the adrenal glands and spinal cord nerves, potentially causing issues with vision, movement, and understanding. The early detection, made possible by a heel prick test on her youngest son, Revan, and a subsequent test on his four-year-old brother, Thorin, means that careful monitoring can now be implemented. This proactive approach aims to help them avoid the life-limiting complications typically associated with the condition, which often manifest around the age of four.
