California State Prison, Sacramento Investigates Incarcerated Person's Death as Homicide
California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating the death of incarcerated person Danny Aguilar, 47, at California State Prison, Sacramento (SAC) as a homicide. On August 18, 2026, at approximately 9:30 a.m., staff observed incarcerated person Julio Caesar Madrigal, 36, assaulting Aguilar. Despite orders to stop, Madrigal continued the attack, leading custody staff to fire two less-lethal rounds to subdue him. Life-saving measures were immediately initiated for Aguilar, but he was pronounced deceased by a physician around 10:00 a.m. An improvised weapon was discovered at the scene. Madrigal, who was received from Tulare County on June 9, 2022, for first-degree murder, is currently in restricted housing. Aguilar had been incarcerated since October 26, 2006, from Los Angeles County, serving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
