Drone Explosion in Bulgaria Raises Security Concerns at EU Borders
A drone originating from Romania entered Bulgarian airspace and exploded in a field 100 meters inside the border, according to Bulgaria's Prime Minister Rumen Radev. The incident occurred near the former Kardam border crossing, close to a Trans-Balkan gas pipeline compressor station. Fortunately, there were no casualties or damage to infrastructure. The explosion was detected by Romania's Border Police, and the sound was heard by Bulgarian border patrols. The drone was not detected by Romanian or Bulgarian air defense systems due to its small size and low altitude flight, which makes radar detection challenging. The Bulgarian Security Council held an emergency meeting to address the situation, and teams from the Border Police, National Police, and the Defense Ministry are investigating the type of drone involved.
