Severe Drought Impacts Alabama Farmers
Drought conditions are worsening across Alabama, with 90% of the state classified as 'abnormally dry,' in 'moderate drought,' or in 'severe drought' as of September 22, 2026. The hardest-hit areas include the Black Belt and southern Alabama. Farmers, particularly cattle producers, are facing significant challenges due to the lack of rainfall. Heavy clay soils, which typically retain water, have dried out, making it difficult for farmers to maintain rotational grazing schedules and plant winter feed. Rising input costs, such as diesel and fertilizer, are compounding the financial strain on farmers, who are also forced to purchase supplemental hay.
