Canada Joins Global Combat Air Program as Observer Amid Defense Diversification Efforts
Canada has been approved as the first official observer in the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), a collaborative defense initiative involving Italy, Japan, and the UK. This development was announced during the Farnborough Airshow, where the three governments highlighted the program's status as the only sixth-generation combat aircraft initiative open to international collaboration. As an observer, Canada will gain access to capability development insights and industrial collaboration opportunities, although it will not have a decision-making role. This move comes as Canada seeks to diversify its defense partnerships beyond the United States, following strained relations and increased tariffs under the Trump administration. The GCAP aims to replace existing aircraft like the Eurofighters and Mitsubishi F-2s with new models by 2035, with Edgewing, a joint venture of BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co., leading the program's development.
