Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Acquired by Non-Profit to Prevent Closure
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a historic newspaper with roots dating back to 1786, was on the brink of closure due to financial difficulties. However, the Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism, a non-profit organization based in Maryland, has acquired the newspaper to prevent its shutdown. The acquisition, effective May 4, 2026, comes after Block Communications Inc., the previous owner, announced plans to cease operations due to significant financial losses and ongoing labor disputes. The Venetoulis Institute, which also operates the Baltimore Banner, aims to revitalize the Post-Gazette by maintaining its print days and potentially rehiring a large number of laid-off employees. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
