Ludwig Institute Studies Reveal Plant-Based Diets Enhance Gut Health Through Microbial Metabolism
Recent studies conducted by the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research have highlighted the health benefits of plant-based diets, particularly in promoting gut, immune, metabolic, and cardiovascular health. The research, led by Jenna AbuSalim and Joshua Rabinowitz, reveals that plant fibers and proteins can reprogram microbial metabolism, boosting the production of beneficial metabolites while suppressing harmful ones. The studies, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Nature Metabolism, demonstrate that plant-based foods affect the levels of phenol metabolites, which have varying health impacts. The findings suggest that indigestible plant proteins, termed 'proteins imitating fiber' (Prif), play a crucial role in reshaping the gut microbiome and host metabolism, potentially influencing metabolic health.
