Russian Nuclear Head Warns of Escalation Risk at Zaporizhzhia Plant Amid Ukrainian Attacks
The head of Russia's state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, has expressed concerns over the escalating situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine. The plant, which is under Russian control, has reportedly been targeted by Ukrainian forces for three consecutive days. Alexei Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, stated that the situation is nearing a 'point of no return,' urging Europe to take steps to de-escalate the tensions. The plant, which houses 2,600 metric tons of nuclear fuel, is not currently generating electricity but must remain operational to keep the nuclear fuel cool. Despite recent drone attacks, the plant's management reported no injuries or damage to the facilities. The International Atomic Energy Agency has been monitoring the situation closely, as both Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of actions that could compromise nuclear safety.
