Severe Storms Trigger Tornado Warnings and Damage Across East-Central Illinois
A powerful storm system swept through central Illinois on Friday night, prompting tornado warnings across Champaign, Ford, Iroquois, and Piatt Counties. The National Weather Service tracked a rotation near Monticello moving east at approximately 55 miles per hour, raising concerns about tornado formation, damaging winds, and flying debris. Confirmed tornadoes earlier in the day caused significant destruction in Lena and South Pekin, with structural damage reported and over 1,500 households losing power. In Champaign County, downed trees and power lines were widespread, and emergency crews worked overnight to clear debris. The storm system was part of a larger outbreak affecting multiple states, including Missouri, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, with reports of golf-ball-sized hail and strong winds.
