Kaplan Construction Begins $15.7 Million Transformation of Former Convent into Affordable Senior Housing in South Boston
Kaplan Construction has commenced work on the McDevitt Senior Homes project, a $15.7 million adaptive reuse initiative in South Boston. This project will convert the former St. Augustine’s Convent and Paraclete Center at 207 E Street into 35 affordable apartments for seniors, along with one manager’s unit. The 31,000-square-foot development, undertaken for the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation (South Boston NDC), involves a full interior renovation and exterior restoration of the existing five-story building, complemented by a new addition at the rear. Planned amenities include a lobby, mail room, sitting room, and shared laundry and lounge spaces. The project aims to preserve the building’s historic character while providing much-needed affordable housing. Funding for the project includes $5.145 million from the Mayor’s Office of Housing and the Community Preservation Fund, and $850,000 from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston.
