Arlington Experiences Widespread Power Outages Following Severe '25-Year' Storm
Thousands of Arlington residents are still without power after a severe storm, described as a '25-year' event, swept through the county last night. The storm, which hit around midnight with wind gusts of 60-70 mph, heavy lightning, and rain, caused widespread damage to trees and power lines. As of 3:30 p.m. on Friday, nearly 4,000 Dominion Energy customers remained without electricity, with some not expected to have power restored until midnight or later, according to Dominion Energy spokesperson Aisha Khan. At its peak, the storm affected approximately 20,000 Arlington customers. The primary causes of the outages were fallen tree limbs, downed wires, and broken cross arms. Arlington County has received over 60 service requests, prioritizing blocked roads, especially major and arterial routes, as confirmed by county spokesperson Ryan Hudson.
