Mayor Zohran Mamdani Plans 30% Grocery Discount at Five Future City-Backed Stores
New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani has announced a 30% discount on a core basket of groceries at five new municipal grocery stores. This initiative, part of the Mayor's Affordability Agenda, aims to reduce grocery bills for New Yorkers by offering lower prices on fresh produce, meat, seafood, and pantry staples. The discount applies to all residents, regardless of income, and is expected to save families approximately $1,000 annually. The first store is set to open in Hunts Point, Bronx, by the end of 2027, with all five stores operational by the end of the Mayor's first term. The initiative is supported by a $70 million capital budget allocation.
