Emperor Penguins and Antarctic Fur Seals Endangered by Climate Change
Climate change is driving two iconic Antarctic species, the emperor penguin and the Antarctic fur seal, toward extinction. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has updated its Red List to classify these species as endangered due to warming ocean waters, melting sea ice, and declining food availability. Emperor penguins, which rely on sea ice for breeding and feeding, have seen a significant population decline, with projections indicating a further halving by the 2080s. Similarly, Antarctic fur seals are facing food shortages as krill, their primary food source, move to deeper waters due to rising temperatures.
