Northern Lights Expected Across Northern US Due to Solar Activity
The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, may be visible across several northern U.S. states this weekend due to a significant coronal hole in the sun's atmosphere. This phenomenon, reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center, is caused by high-speed solar winds escaping from the sun's corona. These winds can lead to elevated geomagnetic activity on Earth, resulting in the stunning auroral displays. The states potentially witnessing this natural spectacle include New York, Idaho, Alaska, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North and South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin. The aurora might also be visible in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont, and Wyoming. The new moon on Friday is expected to enhance viewing conditions.
