Brantley County Wildfire Forces Evacuations and Destroys Homes
A significant wildfire, known as the Highway 82 Fire, is currently affecting Brantley County, Georgia. As of the latest update, the fire has consumed over 5,000 acres and remains only 10% contained. The Brantley County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the fire has not crossed the river, and significant overnight growth is not anticipated, although the situation remains fluid. Mandatory evacuations have been issued for several areas, including GA-110 (Yellow Pine Rd) to Thrower Rd and Browntown Road from Hwy 82 to Greenleaf Rd. The Brantley County School System has closed all schools due to ongoing fire hazards. A state of emergency has been declared, and federal funds have been authorized to assist in firefighting efforts. The fire has already destroyed 54 homes, and one firefighter has been injured while battling the blaze.
