New Orleans Uses Christmas Trees to Restore Coastal Wetlands
New Orleans has implemented an innovative program to combat coastal erosion by using discarded Christmas trees. Each year, thousands of trees are collected, bundled, and airlifted into coastal wetlands to help restore marshland. This initiative has been running for nearly 30 years and has restored marshland equivalent to nearly 200 football fields. The trees act as barriers, trapping sediment and reducing water flow, which aids in marsh plant growth and strengthens the wetlands. This program is part of broader efforts to protect Louisiana's disappearing coastline.
