U.S. and Russia Resume Military Dialogue Amid Ukraine Conflict
The United States and Russia have agreed to reestablish high-level military-to-military communication following a meeting in Abu Dhabi. This decision comes after discussions involving U.S. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, senior Russian, and Ukrainian military officials. The dialogue aims to provide consistent military contact as efforts continue to achieve a lasting peace in Ukraine. This communication channel was previously suspended in 2021 due to escalating tensions between Moscow and Washington, particularly before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The resumption of dialogue is seen as a step towards reducing tensions and preventing military incidents, such as the March 2023 incident where a U.S. drone was downed in the Black Sea by Russian jets. The talks also included a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides releasing captured servicemen.
