Anthropic's Claude AI Discovers Novel Enzyme System Resembling CRISPR
Anthropic's Claude AI has identified a previously unknown enzyme system within viruses that infect bacteria, which bears a structural resemblance to CRISPR, the well-known gene-editing tool. This new system, named array-associated reverse transcriptase (ART), was discovered after Anthropic scientists provided Claude with a broad prompt. The AI, specifically around 950 Claude agents, spent 21 hours analyzing a vast database of DNA sequences, processing 210 million tokens. This process involved gathering over 200,000 reverse transcriptases (RTs), shortlisting 3,500 new candidate systems, and ultimately narrowing them down to 20, each with a detailed report for human review. The discovery marks the first significant finding from Anthropic's new life sciences research group and wet lab. While the precise function, biotech usefulness, and overall significance of ART are still under investigation, early lab tests suggest that its array is expressed as distinct short RNAs, hinting at a mechanism similar to CRISPR...
