Wildfire Devastates Homes in South Georgia, State of Emergency Declared
A significant wildfire that began on Monday in south Georgia has ravaged thousands of acres, primarily affecting Brantley County. According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, the fire has destroyed dozens of homes and several businesses. In response, Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency across 91 counties, including Richmond, Columbia, Burke, Jefferson, and McDuffie. The emergency order includes a ban on burning yard debris and agricultural material in these areas. The wildfire's smoke has been carried by winds into the Augusta area, with many residents reporting the presence of smoke. The increase in wildfires is attributed to climate change, which is causing higher temperatures and prolonged droughts, leading to drier and more flammable conditions.
