UK Government Urged to Save Jodrell Bank Observatory Amid Funding Cuts
Over 100 artists, writers, and scientists have appealed to the UK government to reverse funding cuts to the Jodrell Bank Observatory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the UK's largest radio telescope. The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) announced it would withdraw funding for the e-Merlin network, a national radio astronomy facility, by March 2028. The observatory, which includes the historic Lovell telescope, plays a crucial role in global scientific research, including tracking space debris and studying the universe's early history. The cuts threaten 28 jobs and could impact nearly 3,000 researchers.
