Journalists Report Over 216,205 Russian Soldiers Killed in Ukraine Conflict, Highlighting Regional Disparities
A joint investigation by the BBC Russian Service, Meduza, and a team of volunteers has identified the names of more than 216,205 Russian service members who have died since the onset of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. The data, compiled from open sources and local records, reveals significant regional disparities in casualties. Notably, the regions of Bashkortostan and Tatarstan have reported death tolls surpassing those of the Soviet Union during the decade-long war in Afghanistan. The investigation highlights that the probability of dying in the conflict is 20-30 times higher for men from regions like Tuva, Buryatia, and Altai compared to those from Moscow. The report also notes that 77% of the officer losses are junior-level commanders, with confirmed deaths of 7,143 officers, including 494 lieutenant colonels, 164 colonels, and 15 generals.
