UN Structural Reform Agenda Seeks Rebalancing of Global Power Dynamics
The UN structural reform agenda is focused on rebalancing power dynamics within existing global institutions, including the United Nations and Bretton Woods institutions. This initiative aims to expand representation for unrepresented regions, particularly across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, by increasing permanent and non-permanent seats. A key aspect of this reform is to restrict the use of the veto power in cases of mass atrocities. The agenda also calls for a rebalancing of voting power within the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank to better reflect current global GDP shares, ensuring that Emerging Markets and Developing Countries (EMDCs) hold blocking minorities. Furthermore, it advocates for the restoration of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Appellate Body to prevent unilateral trade coercion. The overarching goal is to make global institutions more democratic, representative, and accountable, adapting structures that were established decades ago to contemporary challenges.
