Israel Receives Largest-Ever Submarine from Germany, Enhancing Naval Capabilities
Israel has taken delivery of its largest-ever submarine, the IMS Drakon, from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) in Germany. This acquisition is part of Israel's efforts to strengthen its military capabilities. The Drakon, costing approximately €550 million, is the largest submarine built in Germany since World War II and the most expensive received by Israel. It features an air-independent propulsion system, allowing extended underwater operations. This submarine is the sixth procured from TKMS for Israel's 7th fleet, with three more Dakar-class submarines expected by 2031. The German government is financing about 20% of the total cost of these submarines.
