Cholera Outbreak in Chad Results in 13 Deaths and 239 Infections
Chad is currently experiencing a cholera outbreak that has resulted in 239 reported cases and 13 deaths, primarily affecting the capital city, N’Djamena, and the northern province of Hadjer Lamis. The outbreak was officially declared on July 24, and since then, approximately 50,800 people have been vaccinated. The Ministry of Health in Chad has highlighted the challenge posed by limited access to safe drinking water and sanitation, which exacerbates the spread of cholera. The disease, caused by ingesting bacteria-contaminated food or water, can be fatal within hours if untreated, although it is easily curable with rehydration salts or antibiotics.
