President Trump Implements Travel Ban to Protect U.S. from Security Threats
President Donald J. Trump has signed a Proclamation to restrict the entry of foreign nationals from several countries deemed to pose significant security risks to the United States. This action follows an Executive Order issued on January 20, 2025, which directed national security agencies to assess the risks posed by various countries. The Proclamation fully restricts nationals from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, and Libya, and partially restricts nationals from 7 other countries, such as Cuba and Venezuela. The restrictions are based on deficiencies in screening and vetting processes, high visa overstay rates, and lack of cooperation in sharing identity and threat information. The Supreme Court has upheld the President's authority to impose such restrictions under section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
