Ukraine Holds POWs from 51 Countries Fighting for Russia, Ombudsman Reports
Ukraine is currently detaining prisoners of war (POWs) from 51 different countries who have been fighting for Russia, according to Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian parliament’s human rights commissioner. This development highlights the extensive global recruitment efforts by Moscow to bolster its military forces. Russia has been targeting foreign nationals with promises of lucrative jobs, educational opportunities, and military salaries. Some individuals have willingly enlisted, while others have reported being deceived or coerced into service. Lubinets emphasized the legal repercussions of joining Russia's military efforts. The nationalities and total number of these POWs were not disclosed. A recent investigation by BBC Russian Service/Mediazona revealed that at least 3,589 foreign nationals have died fighting for Russia, including 2,304 North Korean troops. Russia's recruitment strategy spans across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, often involving misleading contracts and rapid deployment to combat zones.
