Drought Intensifies in Kansas and Oklahoma, Impacting Winter Wheat Production
Drought conditions are worsening across key agricultural states in the U.S., with Kansas and Oklahoma experiencing significant impacts. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, 60% of Kansas, the largest producer of winter wheat in the country, is now under drought conditions, up from 57% the previous week and a stark increase from just 4.9% three months ago. Similarly, 80% of Oklahoma is facing drought, a figure that has remained steady week-over-week but has risen from 74% three months prior. These conditions are part of a broader trend affecting the western Corn Belt, where 88% of Nebraska and 50% of South Dakota are also experiencing drought. The prolonged dry weather is raising concerns about crop yields, particularly for winter wheat, a critical staple in U.S. agriculture.
