Big Tech's Data Center Expansion Ignites Political Opposition and Regulatory Scrutiny in Bay Area
Big Tech companies, including Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, are driving a significant boom in data center construction across the Bay Area, leading to widespread political backlash and calls for increased regulation. Cities like Gilroy, Oakley, Pittsburg, Hayward, and San Jose are experiencing a surge in data center development, often approved under outdated zoning rules. This rapid expansion has sparked concerns among residents and local governments regarding electricity and water consumption, noise pollution, and a lack of transparency in the approval process. In response, at least six Bay Area cities have implemented moratoria, initiated public hearings, or are actively revising their development codes.
