Aisha Wahab Leads in California Democratic Primary Amidst Significant AIPAC Spending
Progressive Israel critic Aisha Wahab has secured a narrow lead over AIPAC-backed Melissa Hernandez in the Democratic special election for California’s 14th Congressional District. The race aims to fill the seat vacated by Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell. With 62% of votes counted, Wahab is ahead with 51% to Hernandez’s 49%. This contest has become a focal point for the influence of the pro-Israel group AIPAC in Democratic politics, with AIPAC and its allies investing millions to support Hernandez and oppose Wahab. Wahab, a state senator, advocates for ending U.S. military aid to Israel and has stated that Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute genocide. Hernandez, a moderate Democrat and president of the Bay Area Rapid Transit Board, has focused her campaign on lowering costs and public safety, while acknowledging Israel's right to self-defense but expressing concern over the destruction in Gaza. The two candidates will face each other again in the November general election for the full congressional term.
