NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch Vows Protection for Jewish New Yorkers After Central Synagogue Attack
New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch spoke at Central Synagogue following an antisemitic attack where a man was charged with federal hate crimes. The incident involved Larry Montes, 46, allegedly striking a 63-year-old woman, yelling a racial slur at a 65-year-old Black security guard, spitting on him, and headbutting him. Montes also reportedly damaged religious property and made antisemitic statements. Commissioner Tisch highlighted that Jews, who constitute 10% of New York City's population, are targets in approximately half of all hate crimes in the city. She emphasized that the NYPD has been monitoring attacks against Jewish victims globally since October 7, 2023, and that rhetoric has escalated to direct calls for violence. Tisch reassured the congregation that the NYPD is actively working to safeguard Jewish New Yorkers and prevent antisemitic attacks, with precinct commanders and community affairs officers in contact with synagogues and yeshivas.
