Idaho's Potential Role in Nuclear Campus Sparks Debate Over Waste Storage
Idaho has been selected as one of five potential sites for the U.S. Department of Energy's new Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses. This initiative aims to boost manufacturing, create jobs, and promote American energy independence. However, the selection comes with the condition that Idaho must accept spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste from other states. This requirement would necessitate amending the 1995 'Batt Agreement,' which was designed to limit the influx of nuclear waste into Idaho. The state's leadership, including Governor Brad Little, supports the initiative, citing Idaho's role in nuclear innovation. However, concerns have been raised by groups like the Snake River Alliance, which fears the environmental and health impacts of increased nuclear waste storage.
