Federal Court Approves Student Loan Debt Relief for Over 170,000 Borrowers
A federal appeals court has approved a settlement that will erase student loan debt for more than 170,000 borrowers who claimed they were defrauded by their schools. The settlement, part of the Sweet v. McMahon case, involves borrowers who alleged that their schools misled them about job prospects, earnings potential, and accreditation. The settlement includes the discharge of federal student loans and refunds of certain amounts paid to the Education Department. The case, which began in 2019, challenged the Department of Education's handling of borrower-defense claims, including delays and denials.
