Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada Sentenced to Life in U.S. Prison for Leading Sinaloa Cartel
Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, a co-founder of the Sinaloa cartel, has been sentenced to life in prison by a federal court in New York City. Zambada, who was arrested in 2024, took responsibility for leading one of the world's largest drug-trafficking organizations. His sentencing marks the culmination of a prolonged effort by U.S. authorities to dismantle the cartel's leadership. Zambada pleaded guilty to charges of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise and racketeering conspiracy, admitting to 85 underlying crimes. He was also ordered to forfeit $15 billion, although the majority of these illicit profits have not been located. During his court appearance, Zambada expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged the harm caused by the cartel's operations, which included smuggling large quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine into the U.S.
