Ohio and Trump Administration Intensify SNAP Fraud Crackdown, Targeting Retailers
The Trump administration, in collaboration with Ohio officials, has intensified efforts to combat SNAP benefit fraud. This initiative targets 19 retailers in Ohio accused of illegally exchanging SNAP benefits for cash, alcohol, tobacco, and other prohibited items. The crackdown is part of a broader national effort to enhance oversight of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which supports over 40 million Americans. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Ohio's Department of Public Safety have issued formal violations to these retailers, with potential penalties including disqualification from the program and financial fines. Ohio has also passed legislation to introduce chip-enabled EBT cards to prevent fraud through skimming and cloning.
