Exam Regulator Monitors A-Level Maths Marking Amid Student Concerns
England's exam regulator, Ofqual, is closely monitoring the marking of an A-level maths paper following complaints from students and parents about its difficulty. The paper, administered by Pearson Edexcel, has been described as significantly more challenging than previous years, prompting over 20,000 people to sign a petition for its review. The petition argues that the exam's complexity, requiring multiple layers of reasoning and extended algebraic manipulation, left many students unable to complete it within the allotted time. Students and parents have expressed their frustrations, with some students feeling 'crestfallen' after the exam. Ofqual has stated that their priority is to ensure that grades accurately reflect students' knowledge and abilities. Pearson has indicated that if the paper is found to be more difficult, grade boundaries will be adjusted accordingly.
